This is the scene that greeted us when we arrived at the mooring on Sunday morning. The drama and potency of the water totally transformed. To my intense relief, all was calm – peaceful even – such a contrast to the fury and flood of just a week ago.

Watery sunshine. A glassy stillness. The canal in places thinly frozen. Time to light that stove!
The previous flooded fields adjacent to the canal were iron. The mud frozen solid. The remaining surface flood water a skating rink, and, of course, a slippy-delight for the kids.
A silhouette of the bridge forms in the mirror of the canal.
And happily, the little grey boat that moors alongside us is afloat again, and (outwardly at least) shows little evidence of sinking.
