As with so many boating photographs this one was taken from the steerers point of view. Steering is one of those ‘soul-catching’ times. On a long pound between locks, when the only demand is to stand and steer, time slows down; and allows your heart-rate to ease.

It provides the perfect opportunity to savour the pleasure of Season, or be able to turn and feel the warmth of the late afternoon sun on your face. Perhaps it’s the moment to take a slurp of tea from your enamel mug and nod confidentially at the gostering ducks mucking about in the margins; or to take a photo for posterity.

A photo that captures a moment when your soul – traveling at walking pace – (but still more speedily than the boat) comes a little closer to catching you up…
