Surely there’s something calm in the pose…
a moment of contemplation? Perhaps…

Was it posed on purpose…
or a fleeting moment skilfully caught by the cameraman…?

Suited-up – is he on his way out…
or is it mid-evening caught between two pubs, between lady-love or ‘the lads’…?

Suited-up, surely a little dishevelled…?
He’s been out… he’s had a drink – perhaps…?

Is he reflecting on what might have been…?

Is the sun setting…
or rising…?

Whichever, he’s watching the reflection rather than the reality…

Has it been a long night…
or a long working day with the evening still to come…?

Is the stillness soothing, beyond the thunder
of the water overflowing the lock gate…?

Do mayflies dance above the mirrored water,
causing tantalising ripples for the fish beneath…
stirrings, ripplings out of cool mud and towards
the movement and light.?

Red sky in the morning shepherd’s warning…
Red sky at night shepherd’s delight.

Is the dark silhouette in the middle distance a pair of lock gates…
or the bluff bows of a broad-beamed bows of an approaching ‘G-boat’…?

Was it the thrum-thrum of the engine that caused him to pause
midway between where he’d been and where he was going?

Is he beguiled by the salmon pink sunset/sunrise or bemused…
does he face it with appreciation, resignation or exhaustion…?

Is that Summer heat is rising from the tree-lined avenues on either side of the canal….
Is the cool dampness of the handrail across the lock welcome…?

Where’s he going…?
Where’s he been…?
